Goodbye, Bob. I love you.

Bob “Robert ‘Birdmeat’ Johnson” Osterberg 1996-2010

He was my best friend, my biggest fan and one of the finest people I’ve ever known.

He went peacefully this morning at the vet’s office and with his head cradled in my hands, after a two-year battle with Chronic Renal Failure (CRF), and complications surrounding the end stages, including blindness and GI problems.

Bob and I had been friends and companions since August of 1999, when he moved from his birthplace in Boulder, Colorado, to San Francisco, California. In 2002, we moved to Lincoln, Nebraska and, along with then-new arrival Scooter, took care of each other through some hard times and enjoyed and celebrated the good times.

I will miss him very, very much, especially since he was the only one in the house who liked my guitar playing.

Goodbye, Bob. I love you.

  1. Oh, Maggie, I am so sorry to hear this. Godspeed, Bob, you were a good friend, a much-beloved boy, and a CAT.

  2. Oh sweetie, I’m so sorry. This is the hardest moment of all, in our lives with these wonderful dear companions. I do know how you’re feeling right now. Many of us do. And it just grieves the hell out of us that we can’t bring Bob back (along with our own dear ones), or somehow make you feel just a little less pain right now.

I hope somehow you can sense all of us, though, trying to put our arms around you from our great distance, to send our love and empathy and understanding. I wish to goodness I could hug you in person right now.

  3. I was so very sorry to hear the news, Maggie. Bob was such A CAT in every sense of the word. I will keep you in my thoughts in the days and weeks to come.

    Adieu, sweet Bob.

  4. I’m saddened to read of Bob’s passing. At least you’ll always live on in your memories and photos.

We grieve and live goes on.

About a week ago my rabbit was mauled by what was probably a feral cat. He died the next night despite the best the vet could do. We stopped by a shelter a couple days ago and adopted a sweet lop. She won’t take his place in our hearts, but I’m certain she’ll carve a new place of her own.

    Hugs.
