George and Florence, September, 2010

Florence, the woman using the walker, died this Spring at age 93, leaving her husband, George, our next-door neighbor, a widower at age 91. They’d met and were married right before the outbreak of World War Two. During the war, George, a Seventh-Day Adventist and Conscientious Objector, served in the US Army as a cook and he started to collect decorative plates from Copenhagen, where both their families originally hailed from; by the time of Florence’s death, they had filled an entire wall and the staircase with plates.

  1. Nice story, Maggie and excellent photo as always. It’s wonderful that two people can be together virtually their whole lives.
